Haunted Ogden
By day, Ogden appears as a typical small town in Utah, but by night, this quiet little community awakens more than its share of spooky happenings.
Ogden was not always such a friendly community. In the late 19th century it was full of opium dens and brothels along 25th Street. Many were connected by underground tunnels that were the scenes of violent acts. In fact, for a short time, Ogden was known as the “murder capital” of the West! Today, walk along 25th Street at night and you may hear the sound of popping noises on the pavement. This was where the prostitutes would drop dried beans from second story windows to attract customers. Some believe many are still there still looking for business.
The Bellshire Hospital, once an old mental facility, has a violent past and has been the scene of many paranormal sightings. Legend has it, the doctor managing the hospital had a reputation for implementing experimental treatment methods on patients.
Today people have heard blood curdling screams that seem to come out of thin air, or see figures staring out of the windows. An encounter with a young girl occurred during a recent ghost hunt. Today, the hospital has been converted to an interactive fright theater during the Halloween season.
The Ben Lomond Hotel is a popular destination by ghost seekers. Apparently in the 1940′s a woman staying at the hotel got word that her son died in World War II. She returned home, but she must have enjoyed her stay because many say her spirit has returned and haunts the hallways. There are accounts of the elevator stopping at floors where no button has been pushed. The front desk has received calls from room 1106 when no one is occupying the room. If you visit, be sure to request one of the haunted rooms.
The Union Railroad Station was once a temporary morgue where spirit sightings and unexplained events are common. The most popular tale (with many versions), is of a lady in a blue dress who was arguing with her lover. She quickly turns to run away, steps in front of an oncoming train and is killed instantly. The figure of a woman dressed in blue and crying while running across the rail yard has been spotted over and over.
Dead Haven was a popular Halloween haunted house that has its own eerie past. Although it’s entertained many uses over the years, the building in the 1920′s was a farm implement store located in the wrong part of town. Two apartments across the street burned down, killing 2 occupants, and the area was the site of many accidental deaths and murders. Paranormal experts theorize that there are still wandering souls in the area. Ghostly figures have been spotted and the sound of children’s laughter has been heard at night when the building was empty.
Members of Utah Paranormal Exploration and Research spent an evening staking out the corridors of this creepy place in search of hard evidence of a haunting. In one of their recordings, a voice could plainly be heard saying, “Who’s there?” Other than some flashlights that suddenly refused to work, and shots of a bobbing light appearing through the camcorder of another investigator, the night was fairly uneventful.

Haunted Houses
Almost every town in the United States, when it is more than a century old, features a house that a person claims can be a haunted house. These are the homes that, around Halloween, are used to scare people. Frequently the only thing creating the appearance of a haunted house is the location and the amount of repair or even disrepair as the case might be.
At Halloween night, many people try to fix up their houses to make them seem like haunted house. Some property owners are lucky enough to actually own one of those nearby haunted homes, making it easier for people to believe the decorations. It is probably an old house. The location is most likely back away from the street and in dark areas away from streetlights. There is probably large old timber around, contributing to the dark areas and creating things appear that much spookier.
During the Halloween party season, the local haunted residence may be one that can be rented for Halloween costume parties for all ages (although it possibly should be an older age group if the property is truly scary as individuals would not want to actually cause any traumatic encounters for the extremely young).
A number of the other features for a haunted house encounter can be chairs, doors, as well as stairs that creak. More mature houses often aren’t at the same time insulated so any blowing wind outside could cause the spooky noises within and make lighting on stores swing and sway in any way of sea breezes.
Local cat stories in many cases are told in regards to the local haunted houses.
Probably the owner of the house heard the majority of all of the tales prior to buying that house, especially if it is a small town in which the owner grew up. When who owns the house is a local, it’s easier to result in the Halloween encounter and have the Halloween costume party at that house. If it’s in a small community, it is also easier to make the Halloween experience at the haunted residence really a community effort and knowledge. When it is the suburbs local haunted house, the particular homeowner doesn’t have to set up numerous decorations associated with ghost and also goblins as well as witches to offer the wanted haunted house has an effect on.
Of course, the last reasons a residence may be considered haunted will be the local stories of unconventional or even weird happenings. Lighting appearing inside windows that shouldn’t have lights; sounds across the higher hallways. Home appliances turned on whenever no one is in the house. All these are items that have likely to herald the ghost in the home.

Ghost Hunters – a review
I just started watching Ghost Hunters on a regular basis two seasons ago. Sometimes, the show truly fascinates me. How can anyone forget that strange feeling when a voice tells ghost hunter Grant, ‘You don’t belong here’. Now that was spooky! It was clear as day, and that is the type of moment that I watch the show for.
The appeal of Ghost Hunters is its two common place plumbers – Grant and Jason, who both still work for Roto Rooter while going all across the country on debunking missions for the company they founded called T.A.P.S. These average guys have started a phenomenon that has grown big time. That said, sometimes I just get tired of the sameness.
Things I can’t stand:
-During the investigations, they all talk too much. They need to listen more, and why is it that when they are there looking for ghosts and they ask a question, that when something happens right after that, they ask, ‘what was that’? There’s just a weird disconnect between their reason for being there and how they are in the investigations.
-There’s too much review from the end of prior segment to the start of the next segment. Let’s see more of the investigations and less recapping that takes up a third of the show.
-During the review, they find things but don’t show us what they are. What’s the purpose of this segment? To give more screen time to Steve and Tango who do the reviews? There’s no reason for this bit, and they’re so dang polite and formal with each other.
-At the end of each ‘reveal’, Jason always says, ‘Let’s get out of here’. Number one, that’s rude, and number two, it seems odd that anyone would say that exact phrase every single job.
-At the end of each show, Grant and Jason leave in their vehicle. Jason *always* drives. Grant doesn’t have a license?
-Again at the end of every episode, they say the exact same thing. They go through a brief summary, talking about how so and so took it well and how they did such a great job (they always do a great job), and then Jason says ‘And on to the next’, after which the two men do a fist-jab. Every single week, it’s the same thing.
Things I like:
-You don’t belong here. Those moments make this show. Unfortunately, they’re rare, but when they happen, they sure are great.
I realize my list is weighted heavily towards what I don’t like, but that is the truth of this show. More and more I’m frustrated by the wasted time, and there’s a lot of it, and I’m annoyed by the repetitive dialog. I just don’t buy it. I want some spontaneity that shows this show isn’t a rip off. I still like Ghost Hunters, but I’m glued to it. It’s interesting, but not always compelling.

How to Capture a Ghost on Camera
People are skeptics by nature, if it is not right in front of your face with the proof in hand, usually no one believes it. Paranormal Investigators go out in this field trying to capture ghosts whether it be on film, video or recorder to prove that ghost do exist.
A haunting is very unpredictable, someone can experience what they think is paranormal activity for weeks but when a team of investigators with all of their recording equipment there may be little or no activity at all.
If you want to catch a ghost, you will need to do some homework, find a place that is said to be really haunted and people have had some kind of paranormal experience there, There are a few types of places you will want to check out, old historical places usually have the best activity, usually because in these old places there is so much human emotion tied to the place, spirits tend to linger in places that they once loved when they were alive. A place of sudden death or where someone had committed suicide, death that is sudden and when people are taken out of this world fast, this tends to trigger a haunting. A place of the dead like a cemetery is usually a good place to get activity, and sometimes at haunted locations human remains are found.
When you get to the place you are wanting to investigate, make sure you talk to the owner or person in charge that is familiar with the activity in the location so that you can set up your cameras in these known “hot spots”. In each of these “hot spots” set up your digital camera on a tripod.
Making sure your equipment is clean is also important, there have been lots of times people have mistaken dirt or dust for a ghost when in reality it was just a dusty lens, Investigators find themselves in all kinds of places so it is important to keep the equipment clean at all times, especially right before an investigation.
Be careful of the light around you, sometimes a street light, flashlight or a car passing by can get in the way of your camera, this is what we call lens flare. Lens flare is when the light ahead of the camera coming from any position runs across the lens and creates a skim this will cause streaks, fog looking images that sometimes can be mistaken for a ghostly image, It is easy to do.
In my experience it is not impossible to catch a ghost on camera, it has been done. By allowing your equipment to record for long enough in a paranormal “hot spot”, and then carefully go over all of your evidence, you can capture a real ghost on camera.

Paranormal Romance
The romance genre started with Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, which is about a young woman who was orphaned and fell in love with her boss only to have obstacles in the way. Since then the romance genre has progressed into what it is today. It has more of a focus on the sexual aspect of a relationship rather than the courting aspect. There are novels that do focus on the courtship and love between a couple, but sex is always a part of the novel. Paranormal romance novels have been raising in popularity for many years now. A common trademark for paranormal romances is the inclusion of vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters and demons as well as Greek gods and goddesses in the case of Sherrilyn Kenyon. Paranormal romance finds it roots from Goth fiction. Paranormal romance includes literary traditions of fantasy, science fiction and horror.
Paranormal romance has been around for a while, but with the rise of movies like Underworld, the intrigue of stories with vampires, demons, werewolves and more are becoming more popular. Between the years 2002 and 2004 publications of paranormal romance shot to 170 per year. Paranormal romance is considered the fasted growing sub-genre of romance novels. It blends contemporary living with magical being and powers being our imagination. Many authors include elements of suspense and mystery along with the romanctic elements. Most fantasy and science fiction novels focus on setting and the alternate worlds they create, but with paranormal romance the focus is on the underlying romance, as much as the alternate world.
In the first romance novels creatures like ghosts and other supernatural beings were a part of the storyline as warnings of something terrible or to represent danger, or even to add a spooky atmosphere to the story. They were not the actual characters themselves. Many myths and literary stories about gods and goddess talk about the gods themselves conquering evil, and small indiscretions. But with paranormal romances take the stories to another extent such as Sherrilyn Kenyon who puts a twist on the actions of gods and goddess as well as their children; and their love affairs. Many times the women become the heros within the novel, or become a part of a team with their lovers.
The Dark Hunter series is written by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It revolves around the children Greek gods and goddess and the demons they control and attempt to control. Dark Hunters are supposed to be the hunters of Artemis. Kenyon intertwines demons, Daimons, vampires, gods goddess and humans into a sexy series that draws her readers in. Her paranormal romances draw in readers of all kinds from truck drivers to police officers to students. There is something for everyone. She also has written the Dream Hunter series, Sea Wolves (as Kinley MacGregor) and many more. She is one of the best selling paranormal romance writers. Kenyon’s writing is hot and passionate even when the scenes aren’t sexual. She has a way of making her readers relate to the characters even if they are paranormal characters. I personally wasn’t sure of the romance genre, but Kenyon is one I would read.
Anya Bast is another wonderful paranormal romance author, who also writes erotic romance novels. Bast’t novels focus more on witches and the power they control, as well as vampires and other paranormal characters. Kenyon and Bast have one thing in common, which is typical with paranormal romance: the female main character becomes the hero in one way or another. She becomes part of a team with her love interest or she saves her love interest from the big bad, or even from himself. She is probably more known for her erotic romance novels. Some other authors who write in the paranormal romance genre are Lindsey Sands, J.R. Ward, and Christine Feehan.
Paranormal romance novels is something that will be around for a while. The more people become fascinated with the paranormal the more demand there will be. As well as long as there are authors like Anya Bast and Sherrilyn Kenyon keep writing novels the way they do there will be a following of readers who will want more of their writing. As long as there are stories of vampires, werewolves, demons and more people will be interested in the paranormal romance genre.

Exploring links between paranormal activity and mental illness
The idea that experiences of paranormal activity is linked to mental illness is not a new idea. People who see things that others don’t see or hear things that others don’t hear are, more often than not, going to be seen as something other than normal. While it’s true that mental illness can indeed lead someone to believe they’re having an experience of paranormal activity, this doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone who believes they’ve experienced the paranormal is indeed mentally ill.
One of the most important links between paranormal activity and mental illness comes right from the diagnostic criteria for some mental illnesses. For example, hearing voices is one of the symptoms of schizophrenia, as well as many other mental illnesses. Thus, when someone hears a voice, they immediately qualify for one of the criteria for those particular diagnoses.
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is mentally ill, either. There are more than just a single criteria for mental illnesses. The fact that a person hears a voice (or believes they hear a voice) doesn’t automatically guarantee an illness. All it means is that they heard a voice. There are many things that can cause this type of experience.
It’s tempting to assume, therefore, that anyone who hears a voice must either be mentally ill or have had a paranormal experience. This isn’t the case either. It is entirely possible (and, in the eyes of many, probable) that an otherwise sane individual may experience a momentary sensory hallucination brought on by anything from a bad burrito to an ear infection. That person may come to believe they’ve had a paranormal experience, and it may lead others to believe the person is mentally ill. In all reality, the person may just have had indigestion.
This, of course, doesn’t mean that there are no paranormal experiences. It also doesn’t mean that there are. It also doesn’t mean that every mentally ill person, whose mental illness includes hallucinations or hearing voices as one of the diagnostic criteria, will experience those particular symptoms.
In the end, the whole question of a link between paranormal experiences and mental illness are only peripherally related. In fact, it’s probably best to create a divide between the idea of paranormal experiences and mental illnesses. The link that exists is tenuous, and in many cases, completely irrelevant. The real question – the question of how the individual interprets a given event, is what will help determine whether the event was paranormal, psychological, or even neither.

Ok, this is the hottest new ‘Blair Witch Project’ -esque movie. We are alone at home and weird freaky things are happening. Do you believe? Coming to theaters on September 25, 2009. Starring: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs, Amber Armstrong, Ashley Palmer After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban starter tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

Proving Ghosts Exist
Throughout human history, mankind has attempted to answer the question of what happens to us after we die. Where do we go? Do we continue to exist, or do we evaporate into nothingness? Hypotheses abound. One exciting idea is that the spirit, or conscious energy, of a person continues to exist on a level that is not always detectable by living persons. These spirits are commonly known as ghosts. According to physicist Richard Yannopoulos-Ruquist, ghosts excite physical particles in order to manifest in the physical plane. Because of this, their existence can be proved in much the same manner as dark matter is proved (Yannopoulos-Ruquist). The science and equipment used to prove dark matter are not easily accessible to persons outside the field of physics, but employing current technology, the existence of ghosts can be proved through the use of electromagnetic field detectors, electronic voice phenomena and photographic evidence.
The first way to prove the existence of ghosts is through the use of electromagnetic field (EMF) detectors. According to Ron Milione of The Atlantic Paranormal Society, ghosts produce magnetic fields at levels lower than those of living beings and electronic equipment (Milione, Electromagnetism). For this reason, ghost hunters use EMF detecting equipment to locate magnetic fields that cannot be explained by natural sources. In their use of EMF as evidence of the existence of ghosts, paranormal investigators attempt to communicate with ghosts, asking yes and no questions and making requests such as, “wave your hand in front of the meter,” in the hope that the ghost will respond by lighting the detector.
Skeptics believe that EFM detectors pick up only signals from bad wiring and microwave ovens because that is what the instruments are intended to do (Nickell, 2007). However, before using an EMF detector, ghost hunters do a sweep of the area to detect natural causes of any readings. A responsible paranormal investigator will attempt to find a rational explanation for any anomalous readings before accepting EMF spikes as evidence. The Atlantic Paranormal Society is currently experimenting with a K-II meter which has been modified specifically for the purpose of picking up ghostly activity (Wilson, The K-II Meter So Far…).
The second way to prove the existence of ghosts is through electronic voice phenomena (EVP), first discovered in 1959 by Friedrich Jürgenson. Through experimentation, Jürgenson discovered that voice recordings when no person was present could be reliably replicated (Daniels). Today, Ghost hunters actively seek EVP by asking questions of ghosts and giving them time to answer. Answers are rarely heard at the time of recording; it is only during playback that the voices can be detected. At other times, digital voice recorders or cassette recorders are left running without investigator interaction. Playback sometimes reveals someone speaking even when no one is present. In his book “Ghosts Among Us: Uncovering the Truth About the Other Side,” James Van Praagh explains that this is the result of ghosts imprinting part of their own energy onto the electromagnetic tape or the digital device (Van Praagh, 2008).
Skeptics believe EVP is only stray radio waves or pieces of human communication. They also cite apophenia, a phenomenon in which one sees or hears patters that, in reality, do not exist (Alcock, 2004). Responsible investigators are aware of these possibilities and, therefore, ensure against picking up random outside noises and making words of sounds when no words are present. Areas being investigated are cleared of persons other than the investigators, and white noise machines are sometimes used to help filter out random sounds such as doors closing in the distance (Milione, White Noise). In response to the idea that these recordings are the result of stray radio waves, Milione says this in his article “White Noise”:
“If they had researched it, they would have found that the radio broadcast theory is absurd. Why? Because quite often, these voices actually respond to questions posed by researchers, comment on situations in a relevant manner, and occasionally even address the researchers by name. The chances of a stray radio broadcast doing this with just a few choice words are too remote to even consider by any objective person.”
The third way to prove the existence of ghosts is through photographic evidence. Ghosts can manifest visibly, allowing them to be photographed. They can also interact directly with film and digital memory cards, imprinting their images as faces, full-body manifestations, orbs and mists (Wilson). Of course, skeptics point to natural causes of ghostly images such as double exposure which causes one image to appear transparent, mimicking a ghostly presence (Ghosts Photographed, Proof that They Exist?). They also sneer at photographs of orbs, saying these are merely images of dust or bugs reflecting the light of the flash. The Indiana Ghost Trackers Kokomo Chapter recognizes that photographic evidence is easy to fake and that 99% of orbs caught on film actually are the result of dust and bugs. For this reason, they throw out all photographs containing orbs and rely more on video evidence than photographic (Kokomo Chapter Evidence Page).
Another drawback to photographic evidence is that faces seen in photographs are sometimes the result of over-active imagination or matrixing. Matrixing is the act or phenomenon of seeing familiar patterns in random objects (Wilson, Photographic Analysis: Matrixing). This can be overcome by having several others look at the image without indicating the perceived face or object and remembering that true ghosts are made up of their own material and are not part of the background.
Paranormal investigation is a difficult field. Most evidence cannot be recreated in a laboratory setting, so the scientific community dismisses the findings of paranormal investigators. Still, with patience and dedication, eliminating the impossible and explaining natural causes of what we see, the proof can be found. The tools exist for collecting the evidence, if we will only use them.
